LA Painting is a celebration of material, mark-making, and the human experience, boasting exhibitions curated by writer Cooper Johnson in the Main Gallery, an immersive collaboration between painter Kaye Freeman and performance artist Amy Kaps in the East Gallery, and 49 artists from the Circle of Truth project, created by Shane Guffogg and Laura Hipke, in the South Gallery. Three-dimensional kaleidoscopic works by David Allan Peters are on display, as well as a site-specific installation by Erika Lizée that spans the three floors of the MOAH lobby atrium. Highlights from MOAH’s permanent collection are also featured throughout the museum.

Narrow Lands

"While Martin has been compared to Truro’s Edward Hopper and Maine’s Andrew Wyeth, her brushwork has an open, flowing spontaneity; still, her subject has much in common with painters whose melding of landscape and structure offer a template for isolation and separation.

Martin’s paintings share Hopper’s sense of mystery: scenes tiptoe close enough to their off-balance subjects without intruding. In the desert paintings, Martin’s interest is what is lost when hardscrabble land attracts a developer’s eye; in her “Narrow Lands” series, a soft palette intimates the loss of the built environment, abandoned or gentrified into oblivion."

The permanent collection is an important measure of any museum’s value. At PAAM, the holdings of local and regional art is extensive and dynamic, comprising over 3,000 works by over 700 Twentieth Century and contemporary artists who have worked in Provincetown and on Cape Cod. Their styles were revolutionary and remain noteworthy in the history of American Art. The PAAM Collection weaves together at least three major art movements—each a significant strand of American art history—and creates perspectives that uniquely position the Provincetown Art Colony as a pertinent fixture to the larger art world.
